Scavenging Mustafa Centre

Noms and I are pretty different as humans despite sharing a lot of DNA but one thing we have in common is a strange love of supermarkets. Mustafa Centre, located in Little India, is just that, and more.

Not quite a supermarket nor a shopping mall, Mustafa is a huge, 24-hour complex of just one gigantic 6-floor store boasting everything imaginable at fairly reasonable prices – but be prepared to hunt for them. The entire building is a literal maze of aisles and floors, tightly packed and chaotically organised by function.

Mustafa offers a huge variety of brands, though may only stock a certain selection of items. We noticed that things such as small kitchen appliances which may be uncommon in an Asian household is less likely to be available. One such example was our search for a waffle iron in which we only found a stove-top pan rather than the machine itself.

That being said, many items we did find surprised us. In the grocery floor was a selection of European chocolate brands as well as a full supermarket, including fresh fish and meat. Items that travellers might need on short notice, such as toiletries and phone-related gadgets are easily accessible on the ground floor of the building.

Mustafa Centre is not a must-visit destination in Singapore, especially if you’ve only got a few short days. But if you’re in the area with some time to kill, and need to get out of the heat for a couple hours, it’s worth a look.
